They picked childhood experiences like cleaning the hallway closet on Saturday mornings, special red coats their mother sewed for them, and playing with cut-out dolls on the front steps. “My sister and I remembered the same events differently. In sharing our recall of these times, she filled in details of the little spaces of our growing up together that I never knew were spaces. I learned more of the life that we shared. For her to understand how much I had looked up to her brought us closer together.”

By telling our story we express our world
and ourselves to others. When we unite ourselves to someone close to us by telling stories about our shared past, we create a relationship legacy, a living memory.

Our relationship stories are also our lifeline with others. By sharing our stories with someone important to us, we can see the events of our life from different, surprising perspectives.

“The Grace of Ordinary Days” is an invitation to tell your stories together from the past, and equally important, to consider beginning the journey of shaping your stories into the future. Moving forward in creating your mutual stories could change your view of each other in unexpected and rewarding ways. It could link you with someone in a way you never imagined. Together you create an original work of art - a unique lifelong memoir.

Relationships with people we treasure are a form of artistic expression. Such relationships are a co-creation that shapes a mutual story, which becomes a work of art, a relationship legacy. The Grace of Ordinary Day presentation provides a deeper understanding and way of how to enrich those relationships with people we deeply care about.

Meaningful and lasting relationships involve originality and dedication. The process of bringing alive and nurturing a relationship resembles the balance, movement and focus needed to create a lasting work of art. This presentation is based on the book, The Grace of Ordinary Days, by Kay Saunders and Bernie Saunders, poet mother and photographer son, and what they learned about their relationship as a work of art.

Bernie shares five key characteristics common between developing art and nuturing relationships. The session is an invitation to explore and bring alive the simplicity and beauty of our life by gaining a new perspective of how to enrich relationships with loved ones.

During the summer of 1997, Bernie Saunders took his camera, his passion for nature and his fascination with Georgia O’Keeffe’s artwork, and spent three months sitting in flower gardens and capturing the inside world of flowers.

Bernie’s presentation focuses on what happens when people find themselves stuck in the repetitious mud of their everyday lives. He shares six key lessons the flowers taught him about life’s focus and passion, and how taking breaks gives people the time and space needed to recapture their spontaneous natural spirit.

Bernie’s inspirational presentation and powerful artwork invite participants to explore the ins and outs and ups and downs of their lives, and to consider how they can balance themselves during times of self-exploration, uncertainty, and transition.
